Jolly Pumpkin & Big Island Brewhaus Collab Release!

IMG_2182.PNG

We lei'd down some incredible plans for this event...but as fate would have it, sometimes your best plans don't work out. (we had lined up all three kegs for this event, but they got lost!)

But we are super stoked to finally be releasing the bottles from this amazing collaboration between Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales - Dexter & Big Island Brewhaus. The two breweries and head brewers, Ron and Tom, are close friends and incredible brewers. Join us as we release the bottles of Best Lei'd, Plans and Best Lei'd Plans as well as a very special, single keg of Bourbon Barrel Aged Best Lei'd Plans

Here's the deets on the three beers. You'll want to buy them as a set to fully enjoy them. Best Lei'd Plans is a blend of Best Lei'd and Plans ;).

Best Lei'd
ABV: 6.9%
IBUs: 30
TIME IN OAK: 7 Months
HOPS: Amarillo, Cascade, Citra, Hallertaur Blanc, & Centennial
GRAINS: Pilsner Malt, Wheat Malt, Munich 10, Flaked Barley, & Acidulated Malt
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: Grapefruit
LAST RELEASE: August 2018
This sour dry hopped fruited ale was brewed in collaboration with our friend Tom, from Big Island Brewhaus. This is part one of a three-part series and includes Amarillo, Citra, and Centennial hops followed by grapefruit before being dry hopped with Hallertaur Blanc and Cascade. The dry hop addition helps lend softer notes of juicy grapefruit and citrus. Finishing with a nice Jolly Pumpkin funk and moderate bitterness.
Now this, this is a beer we can talk story over…
I first “e” met Tom Kerns when he was brewing at a brewpub, Maui Fish and Game Brewing Company. Laurie and I were thinking about my taking a job as Head Brewer on Kauai, and Tom was discussing distributor / small brewer relations.
Fast forward a few years. Laurie and I fall in love with Big Island. We see a taco shop in Waimea, Tako Taco. Wouldn’t that make a great little brewpub we both agree. Parking would be tough, though…
Add a few more years, Tom and Jayne buy Tako Taco, and after a lot of hard work, open Big Island Brewhaus. It quickly becomes the favorite stop for tacos, burritos, and Tom’s wonderful beers.
Cheers & Mahalo plenty!

Plans
ABV: 6.9%
IBUs: 30
TIME IN OAK: 7 Months
HOPS: Amarillo, Cascade, & Citra
GRAINS: Pilsner Malt, Vienna Malt, Oat Malt, Flaked Barley, &A cidulated Malt
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: Grapefruit & Cherry
LAST RELEASE: August 2018
This sour fruited ale was brewed in collaboration with our friend Tom, from Big Island Brewhaus. This beer is part two of a three-part series and includes Amarillo, Cascade, and Citra hops followed by additions of cherry and grapefruit. The tart cherry accentuates the dry grapefruit, leaving a lingering bitterness on the tongue. Full of grapefruit pith, oak, and funk, with a very subtle dry cherry finish.
Tom and I are both naturally shy and reserved, but eventually we become friends. At least I’m pretty sure we became friends… ;-) And we decide to brew a beer together. We plan and plan, brainstorm and brainstorm, choose the perfect local ingredients…
The fruit is decided, the hops and grains ordered. All in plenty of time. Because the one thing you don’t want to come up short on, is time.
Cheers & Mahalo plenty!

Best Lei'd Plans
ABV: 6.9%
IBUs: 30
TIME IN OAK: 7 Months
HOPS: Amarillo, Cascade, Citra, Halltertaur Blanc, &Centennial
GRAINS: Pilsner Malt, Vienna Malt, Oat Malt, Flaked Barley, Acidulated Malt, Munich 10, & Wheat Malt
ADDITIONAL INGREDIENTS: Grapefruit & Cherry
LAST RELEASE: August 2018
This sour dry hopped fruited ale is a blend of two beers we brewed with our friend Tom, from Big Island Brewhaus. We blended 25% of Best Lei’d with 75% of Plans and ended up with what we are calling, Best Lei’d Plans. Combining the cherry and grapefruit elements of one beer with the dry hopping regimen of the other. Leaving you with a tantalizing hop bouquet. Erupting with flavors of sweet lemony citrus, juicy grapefruit, Jolly Pumpkin funk, and hints of cherry skin.
Later, Laurie and I are on island again. We’ll pour beer over on Maui for the Maui Brewers Fest, but also, finally, we brew with Tom and his team! I drive up the night before for a beer, to go over details, and finalize the recipe… and Tom tells me.
“Oh, about that. The container didn’t arrive. (All of the malts and hops we planned on using.) But we have the fruit!!!”
So, we improvised, as all good brewers do… And of course, borrowed a name… As all good brewers do...
Back in Dexter, we brewed three versions and blended a fourth. We even gave them the same names. Try to keep up with all that!
Enjoy!
Cheers & Mahalo plenty!
